Alcohol brief interventions information pack: NHS Health Scotland

This information pack is aimed at practitioners who are involved in the delivery of alcohol brief interventions. The interventions are designed to treat patients who are 16 years or over. For further information about the pack, please email Karen Cruickshank.

Cartoons: Walk the Talk

Walk the Talk’s national conference in 2008 saw the production of a series of cartoons. The cartoons represent some of the issues and themes that were generated from the event. These include:

Children and young people's healthcare rights

A pack for those working with children and young people (primary 1 to secondary 6) to help them understand their healthcare rights and responsibilities. The pack includes an animation DVD. You can order your pack by contacting Action for Sick Children.

Confidentiality and working with young people: Brook Advisory Centres

Brook is the only national voluntary sector provider of free and confidential sexual health advice and services specifically for young people under 25. We’ve highlighted Brook’s training manual on providing confidential health services. You’ll find many other good reports on the Brook website.

The leaflet was produced by members of Young Papyrus. It provides a young person’s view of hopelessness and despair. It’s useful for parents who are trying to communicate with a depressed young person.

Rough guide to communicating with young people: Communities Scotland

Here’s a practical guide to communicating with young people. The guide is accompanied by a DVD. It’s useful for youth workers, schools and organisations wishing to engage with young people. It’s particularly useful for those agencies with less experience of community engagement and consultation.

Scottish Commissioner for children and young people

The portal brings together a wide range of resources and case studies for those who work with children and young people. It’s updated regularly with the latest events and information.

Sexual health and relationships

SHARE is part of the national training programme that was originally established by NHS Health Scotland. Here you’ll find a training course and educational materials designed for professionals who are working with young people on issues of sexual health. The Adolescent Health e-learning project: e-Learning for Healthcare

The e-learning project aims to ensure that all health professionals have essential youth communication skills and that they understand young people's rights to consent and confidentiality. Here you’ll find a range of modules divided into topics and sessions. The modules are pitched at differing levels to suit a variety of healthcare professionals.

The GP service for children and young people

A leaflet that provides useful information about visiting the GP with your child and answers questions parents and carers may have.

“You’re Welcome” quality criteria: Department of Health [PDF]

“You’re Welcome” sets out principles that will help health services become more youth friendly. It covers areas to be considered by commissioners and providers of health services. Content is based on examples of effective local practice.

What to expect when a child goes to hospital

A booklet that will answer some of the questions families may have when a child goes to hospital. It aims to provide information to help them cope better with an unknown or worrying situation.

Youth friendly health information: Young Scot partnership

NHS Health Scotland and Young Scot work in partnership to provide youth-friendly information on a variety of health topics in a variety of formats.
