Sex and relationships
Scotland has stubbornly high rates of teenage pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia have dramatically increased in the past decade. Concerted action is required to ensure that young people have the information and services that they need to protect themselves against unwanted pregnancy and disease.
Sexual health is not only about promoting the benefits of contraception or safer sex. Considerable emphasis is now given to the promotion of positive relationships, including respect for self and others, and acceptance of diversity.
Young people should be encouraged to develop relationships that feel comfortable for them, and to delay having sex until they feel they are ready. Open and honest communication about sexual health can help them to do this.
