Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) young people

As young people make the transition from childhood to adulthood, coming to terms with sexuality can be difficult. Lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender young people may have particular concerns about confidentiality, and may need reassurance that any information about either their sexual orientation or gender identity will not be disclosed without their consent.

While health services have traditionally focused on promoting sexual health for LGBT young people, professionals should also be aware of, and sensitive to, other needs, including mental health issues. For example, depression, anxiety or stress may be linked to bullying because of a young person's sexuality.

Health professionals should also be aware that LGBT is one of the six strands promoted by the Fair For All project. Fair For All-LGBT is a partnership project between Stonewall Scotland and the Directorate General of Health and Wellbeing. It provides strategic support to NHS Scotland to promote equality and diversity for LGBT service users and staff.

Particular attention should be paid to LGBT young people's rights. LGBT Youth has produced a Youth Charter of Rights which sets a benchmark for mainstreaming equal rights for LGBT young people.

LGBT Youth Scotland supports organisations which aim to:

  • identify, adopt and promote good practice
  • ensure that they are fulfilling their legislative obligations
  • learn to challenge homophobia, and talk about issues facing LGBT young people in a non-threatening way
  • diversify and improve the quality of their service
  • set themselves apart as a centre of excellence in LGBT inclusion.

More information on signing up for the charter is available at www.lgbtyouth.org.uk
